Provenance:“I bought at an antique shop in Singapore. Possibly very old dvaravati item”.

The artwork submitted for appraisal is a carved stone sculpture that has been created by an artist who has not signed the work and who at the time of the completion of this appraisal is unknown. The sculpture may be composed of a limestone or sandstone medium. The Buddha head sculpture that is the subject of this appraisal appears similar to images of Buddha that originated in the Dvaravati culture that developed in Thailand (6th to the 13th century). The sculpture is are presentation of Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) the great spiritual and religious leader who lived in ancient India. A sculpture of Buddha’s head is intended to be symbolic of Buddha’s greatness, his calm and meditative character. The down cast eyes of Buddha in this sculpture indicatea state of meditation. The sculpture includes the curled hair tufts, the rounded ushnisha and elongated ear lobes very often featured on representations of Buddha.
