Two prominent ridges projected from the surface serve to keep the main body of the bell from touching the elephant’s skin and dulling its tone. Inside the bell there is a loose pellet which acts as a rattle when the elephant moves. These types of large bells can be seen hanging from the necks of elephants depicted in numerous Khmer bas-reliefs at Angkor, and on elephants represented in Khmer twelfth-century ceramics. The Khmer are the ancient inhabitants of Cambodia.
From the 7th to the 14th centuries they established a powerful kingdom based at Angkor from which they ruled over much of Thailand.
